launch 2 command pod and switch to nonprimary in orbit using "take control" button. This will shift the camera center, but you can't actually control the pod
When you add parts, they link up with the current primary command pod. If you want to build a sub-craft, you will need to start a new craft and then create a subassembly with it. You can then add that subassembly to your larger craft. This will make sure all parts in the sub-craft are linked with the sub-craft's command pod.
This is only if you want to control the sub-craft while it is still connected to the main craft. If you just want to jettison the sub-craft, then you don't need to take that extra step. Once it's jettisoned, all parts in the sub-craft will figure out they are disconnected from their original command pod and search for a new one, at which point they will find the only remaining command pod in the sub-craft.
