I had my nav sphere locked to maneuver and the ship stabilized in that orientation months before reaching the maneuver node. I warped to the node in stages, verifying the ship was in the correct orientation before each warp. On arrival, as I heard the engines start up, the magenta maneuver indicator disappeared from the nav ball and the ship started to rotate. Eventually, as you can see in the thumbnail, the maneuver indicator came into view on an entirely different part of the nav ball.

The reason I was being so careful is because this is the 2nd time I've done this burn. The first time, I wasn't watching closely, though I saw the ship rotate and afterward, the resulting path was not close to Tydos as I'd planned.

This is the only maneuver planned for this or any other craft. It was planned while the ship was still in Droo's SoI, though the node itself is in Juno's SoI.

Allowing the burn to continue, (in the middle of writing this, unpausing it in screenshot mode,) shows the ship not reaching the new target orientation. Instead, it stops turning and starts to turn back the other way. Then, a message appears; something like "unable to achieve target, aborting auto burn," and the engine shuts down.
