I just got into the abyss. What I did is as follows:
1. Select a powerful rocket with insane delta V.
2. Launch straight up at full throttle.
3. Once in space, cancel all horizontal velocity.
4. Keep burning at full throttle.
5. Time warp. You should now be in the abyss.

@Pedro did you time warp after finishing the second stage’s tanks?
I found that there is only a small window somewhere in the realm of 3900 to 4300 m/s in velocity. Once I got through that regime, everything was fine and my trajectory came back. I got there again, then killed my throttle and warped. I then got banished into the abyss.
Update: 4100 to 4250 m/s seems to be the magic range for Droo. I tried again on Luna, and I got the same result at 1000 m/s. I believe that the abyss can claim you only if you just barely break out of the SOI. Just before you lose your trajectory, you should see your line spazz out and show a nonsense line complete with zig zags and even reversals. It’s a careful balance to strike, but, once you’re there, you can be banished with the push of a button.
I’ve tried it with other crafts just now, and the result is the same.
