It appears that the fairing on my rocket is bugged. The crew compartment inside is taking heat damage during ascent when it shouldn't be. Fairing encloses the parts and the part connections aren't overlapping or "bypassing" the fairing as far as i can tell. No real reason that is apparent why it should be taking damage.
