In the stock game you can't select an encounter to get a better view, and you can't see the moons of the planet, so it is difficult to flyby or land on one. A better system I think would be to have a "hologram" of the planet and it's moons at the encounter so that you can see where the moons will be when you encounter it and select the encounter to get a better view.
