playing on an ipad air 2 and the frame rate is steady at 23 fps but then it freezes. however all the controls still work as i can hear the engines spooling up

I would recommend reducing the graphics quality until you can maintain 30 fps consistently. Reducing Resolution percentage is an easy way to speed up framerate without much noticeable degradation to visual quality. Try about 75%.
