Currently, the price of rocket engines scales linearly with size (double the size, double the price). However, the thrust scales quadratically with size (double the size, quadruple the thrust).
This results in the logical endpoint of rocket engines being as large as possible, contrary to real-life engines (F-1 development was tumultuous, and almost every modern vehicle uses multiple engines per core, except Angara and various LH2 + LOX rockets such as Ariane 5/6 and Delta IV).
