I'm going to try to explain this but my english knowledge could be too limited.

A playback mode (desable by default) could make complex missions easier. Imagine making a F9 with recovery. With playback you could fly the F9 and control de 1st stage booster after separation, land it and start playback. When getting to the separation again change the control from the booster to the 2nd stage and see the booster maneuver itself.

Another function this could have (and I would love this) is content creation. Having a playback mode we could make more complex videos by first playing the mission and then caring about filming in playback, attempting different camera angles and improving the quality of them.

I think this could be implemented by saving the ship position, direction and burn time, without calculating again the fisics (that could end with different resoults each time and be more demanding for the PC).

I hope I've explained this clearly enough :)

yeah, advanced programming will definitively be a must for SR2

@Opise227 Nice idea the multiple screens one, another possible fix would be having the possibility of programming the ship chip

A replay mode for better videos would be totally possible, but an interactive playback... is as complicated as time travel
Just imagine what happens if a rocket enters in collision with another while playback is active.
How will the first control react? Will it try to correct it’s trajectory? Give up the commands? Continue the orders and change the trajectory? And most importantly, if this rocket is damaged, will it change automatically it’s power source if the first isn’t responding? And if there’s multiple engines but only few damaged, should it continue with the same power source knowing that it’ll probably be unstable?
There’s a lot of things that can go on only for this scenario, but everything should happen at the same time
An alternative would be something like a double screen, giving you the control of 2 crafts at a time (and since there is two ctrl, two shift, qweasd and uiojkl on a computer, this would basically means local multiplayer ;)) OR, a more advanced node system F.e. a "desired velocity" slider (relative control) and a "desired altitude" working as a sensor, so Falcon Heavy in SR2 would finally be able to get his reactors back at the same time
