Parts appear to disappear instead of explode from heat damage during re-entry

@Cauchy I see what you mean.

Dev Notes: This is probably because the explosions are not moving fast enough and the camera moves away from the explosion to quickly to see it so it looks like the part is just disappearing.

@AndrewGarrison peeple need to see the boom to confirm the craft destroy by high temperature or high pressure

Your fuel tank is heating up from re-entry and it heats up more quickly since its empty and has less mass to absorb the heat and that's why it explodes more quickly.
