I would find it quite fun to play around with bleed-air based and 'back nozzle-less?' side-nozzle-jet-engine designs, such as a Harrier like plane, you could add parts such as compressed bleed intake air powered RCS thrusters (or have the current RCS thrusters be changeable to it) and a engine nozzle that could be mounted on the fuselage of the plane and a nozzle option on the jet engines themselves of 'None' which could divert all of the engine's intake and power to those nozzles, and even back mounted engines that could have custom huge gimbal range (such as 90-100+ deg.) set up via hinges could be possible.
Edit: Such as the F-35B's 95 deg. downward rear engine gimbal.

Like the Harrier's 100 deg. rotation of it's four side nozzled single engine.
