My idea for handheld tools is this: there is a handle part that a astronaut can hold. You would be able to build something up to about 50 Kilograms With struts that are specifically designed for building tools. These struts would be very light. Small batteries would be added so that you could attach them to your tools to power them. The tool heads would be, The drill: a small drill that can take soil samples. The drill could also be attached to a rover. The pickaxe head: Equipping the pickaxe head would give you a swing option when in control of an astronaut. The pickaxe would swing where your tether targeting cross hair is pointing. This would allow you to break off small rock samples. You perhaps could also break off small pieces of crafts with it. The welder head: the welder would allow you to attach small pieces of crafts that have broken off as long as they are within a 10 meter radius. Areas that are damaged would be highlighted in red and by pointing the welder at them and using the welder you could re-attach the part. The welder would run off of some sort off welder specific fuel that you could attach to your tool.
Sample canisters would be another addition. You could have some sort of sample container that could hold about 8 sample canisters. You could collect surface samples and if you were holding a sample container, the surface samples would be automatically put into the sample canister. You could also attach these containers to rovers and such for autonomous sample taking.
To recharge the batteries of your tools and to store them there would be a tool rack that you could attach to a part. This fuel rack could also refuel/recharge your tools while they were in the rack.
Those are my ideas for handheld tools in simplerockets 2. I think it would be a really great addition to the game.
