There's a couple reasons we need a command configuration specifically designed for jet-hybrid SSTOs:
First, having to edit your PIDs mid flight either manually or with a vizzy program is tedious and clunky.
Second, needing to have your command configuration set to rocket in order to be able to maneuver in space means it's never very good at flying a plane in the atmosphere, especially a supersonic one in the upper atmosphere. Basically roll is wonky and it's hard to keep your wings level, as if all the chip cares about is keeping the nose pointed in the right direction, regardless of roll.
A different, maybe even better, way to achieve basically the same result would be to allow us to change our command configuration mid-flight, and set predetermined PIDs for both modes in the builder.
