Alcubierre Drive

The Alcubierre Drive is a concept which uses exotic matter and “regular” matter to expand space “behind” a spacecraft and contract the space “in front” of the spacecraft

It was a very clever idea for traveling to other stars without waiting more than entire lifetime. But there are two problems, one is that we have no idea where to get one jupiter worth of exotic matter. The second problem is that you can’t turn it off, so you’ll be accelerating into intergalactic space forever devoid of steering to get back home; you also can’t see anything—you see white

But I may have remotely solved one of the problems; turning it on and off

We use a large amount of exotic matter and normal matter in the front and back of the ship and to turn it on we compress it to something like 10 million atmospheres so it will generate gravity, then we accelerate very quickly. You can turn it off by letting off the pressure

I think this is a bad idea but it kinda makes sense

oh god i just realized that going faster than light to a location is instantaneous, it has to be somehow compressed and expanded in 0 seconds

    that's understandable ofc

this is all conceptual and for stories and game lore and functionality

yeah then there's no way to actually go FTL using it

the alcubierre drive goes up to 10c, the exotic matter required to exceed 10c is greater than the mass of the observable universe
or just to make it work…

from what i've read somewhere (might be wikipedia), apparently we only need about one ton of exotic matter for the warp drive, not sure tho

    true
    it was a guess

@FriendlyFin True, but 10 million atmospheres is a lot more than 4 - We can barely make metallic hydrogen as it is

to make metallic hydrogen you need to compress hydrogen to 4 million atmospheres

@FriendlyFin Ah, ok. makes sense but it would be very difficult to compress all that matter

compress exotic matter and normal matter on the front and back of the ship
the compression increases the density and gravity increases with density

I don't really get what your solution is.. Care to elaborate?
