Since liquid hydrogen has such ridiculously low density, is there any practical use for it?
Btw i mean liquid hydrogen for nuclear thermal engines, not hydrolox.

@HorizonsTechnologies im a big nuclear engine fan, i use them for almost all my smaller probes, I’ve just never used LH before. Thanks for educating me on it (:
@ElmerTheCat this isn’t a mainstream use but I use nuclear engines with water for unmanned one way space probes
@ElmerTheCat my guy nuclear engines aren’t as weak as ion engines. I have a VANILLA ship using LH2 with 13 km/s which is more than enough for a Cylero round trip no refuels and maybe even a Tydos trip.
@ElmerTheCat the fuel tank mass doesn’t change with water as the fuel lmao only the mass added by the fuel
@HorizonsTechnologies fuel tanks have weight, and that weight makes it better to juts use water
@ElmerTheCat twice the efficiency as water. It’s not that bad having bigger tanks
@HorizonsTechnologies but why wouldn’t you use water at that point? I use nuclear engines a lot, i just dont see the advantages of using hydrogen.
@ElmerTheCat increase amount of engines as well as engine power. You can make it work. I’ve made ships for Cylero ships using nuclear.
@HorizonsTechnologies but you need an absolutely massive fuel tank for it to be of any use, to the point that the dead weight of the fuel tank itself outdoes the benefit of using hydrogen.
Very light and very efficient. Only use nuclear hydrogen engines in vacuums for ships.
@ElmerTheCat ah, my bad then
i basically never use nuclear engines so i can't help with that, sorry
@Zenithspeed i mean liquid hydrogen for nuclear thermal engines, not hydrolox. Liquid hydrogen is a lot less dense
weight reduction, i guess?
i've previously made a post asking if it's worth using LH2 and wondering how efficient it really is when compared to the other two fuels, maybe you'll find something there
@ElmerTheCat np experimenting is good too. Forgot to mention but water is the heaviest liquid fuel I believe
