How did Jundroo create the animations for the Droods?

I'm in my career program with 800 million dollars in a small-ish plane, and I took my Drood for a hike, and as I'm having him jump for the fun of it, I wondered, "how did Jundroo animate the Droods?"
I'm curious, and I want to know how it was done. Was it motion capture? Painstaking animation by hand? or was it something else? In any case, I just love being able to have astronauts/people in game.
