There are only 3 rocket engines in the game (not counting the ion). and even the apex engine (which is designed to look like the F-1 engine) only has a thrust of 1,600 kN, not even close to the F-1's of about 6,672 kN. it is really annoying when building large, deep space rockets.
I'm hoping for parametric sliders to modify the engines. E.g. adjust the bell for a design altitude.
Maybe in campaign mode there should be some R&D cost for a new engine, but once it's in your catalog, you can buy copies for some lesser cost. Also, small tweaks to an engine already in your catalog is less expensive than a clean-sheet design.
@UnitedStankCrafts YES the one thing i want in SR2 is a solid rocket booster
@LiamW Ok.
Maybe a solid rocket booster? This will help you make a shuttle without adding too much parts.
@tsampoy there's a tick box somewhere to enable stuff that's normally hidden. I don't have the game in front of me to give you exact instructions
@tars13 so do i actually. for launch escape systems
i personally do really need a small engine, even smaller than pixie is.
@LiamW Wait, what “hidden stuff”
@AndrewGarrison That works great! Much easier to get heavy rockets off the ground without XML modding. Thanks!
@AndrewGarrison You can??? Is it allowed in compaign mode? trying to make my rockets compaign mode friendly
You can scale up the engine's fuel consumption to increase its thrust. That will get it to about 4,000kN. Still not enough, but you could always XML mod it to what you need.
@Jetspeed1001 Fuel adapters can be put anywhere on the bottom of a fuel tank, whereas engines cannot. You put fuel adapters anywhere on the bottom of the tank, and then you can put engines on the Fuel Adapters.
@SupremeDorian i thought you meant connect those to another fuel tank with a engine attached to that fuel tank
wait what @SupremeDorian
@Jetspeed1001 But adding more fuel tanks means more weight which makes the extra engines redundant.
@SupremeDorian I just enable the fuel line on both fuel tanks to do that
@Jetspeed1001 Fuel adapters are a very handy part that allows you to put multiple engines on a single fuel tank. Sometimes it's better to use a bunch of Merlin engines instead of 1 Apex engine.
@LiamW I already have it the size i want it
@Jetspeed1001 If it looks too big on the side boosters, make your center stage bigger and put more engines on it
@LiamW i never said it was too small though
@LiamW for a side booster yes
@Jetspeed1001 Sooooo... now the Apex is too big?
@LiamW i have added side boosters, but for lifting heavy rockets, only the apex will do on side boosters, and then they are too big, looks odd. it would take waaay too many mage I engines on a side booster
@SupremeDorian why would i need those?
As @SupremeDorian has stated, the solar system is 1/5 scale so you don't need your engines to be nearly as powerful. Add 6 large side boosters if you don't have enough thrust. I do agree that in some instances you will need more powerful engines but I think that's what XML is for. If it's for campaign, you'll just have to make smaller rockets or rockets with more side stages and engines
