The vehicle consisted of several things, a launch escape tower, a single engine and an iconic command pod. The Mercury Redstone was a single-stage, single-engine rocket that was used for sub orbital space flght. The Redstone was a modified version of the U.S. Army's Redstone ballistic missile.
