How do you earn points in this game?

I've attached to tether to some crafts parts. But my question is how close do you literally have to be for the tether to fire? I'm having a heck of time doing again.

@whineinstein thank you. Probably a bug as I'm within the length of 3 astronauts from the support beam. And I placed astronauts on the beam and grappled them fine. But it wont attach to any other items.

It should interact with everything, even the terrain. Only some things (the bell of an engine, the inside of an engine) can't be grappled. Either a bug, or you're way too far from that object.
