Music Tracker or Piano Roll?

I've decided to make something on the MFD for composing music. It's going to be a side project and I won't have much time for it so I have to make it simple. It would be much easier to make a music tracker than a piano roll but I'm not sure if people are ok with trackers. I know that the learning curve of tracker is quite steep so do I have to use piano roll instead?
