The solar system formed about 4.6 billion years ago when a dense region of a molecular cloud collapsed. It's located in the Milky Way, a barred spiral galaxy, in a small arm called the Orion Arm. The solar system orbits the center of the galaxy at about 515,000 mph (828,000 kph) and takes about 230 million years to complete one orbit.
The name "solar system" comes from the Latin word for Sun, solis, which is used to describe things related to our star.
