After Starship had been proven too unreliable for human spaceflight and was relegated to cargo hauling duties, NASA, JAXA, ESA and CSA formed a collaboration with the ultimate goal of establishing a reliable connection between Earth and Mars. One of the products of such a collaboration was a system designed to put humans onto a ballistic trajectory from the Martian surface, creatively named the Mars Ascent Vehicle. It is powered by methalox fuel, produced locally by the Sabatier reaction. It features a 2.5 stage design, previously seen on Atlas missiles: a core sustainer motor is flanked by multiple jettisonable boosters, where all engines draw fuel from the central tank. This design provides incredibly high fuel efficiency, while still having a lot of thrust on takeoff.
