Dongfanghong-1 satellite was put forward in 1958 and started to be developed in 1965. It was successfully launched at Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center on April 24, 1970. Dongfanghong-1 satellite, weighing 173 kg, was sent into an elliptical orbit with an angle of 68.44 degrees and an apogee of 441 km and 2368 km respectively by the long march No.1 carrier rocket. The orbit was monitored and the music of "Dongfanghong" was broadcast. After 28 days of operation (design life of 20 days), dongfanghong-1 ran out of batteries and stopped transmitting signals on May 14, 1970. Dongfanghong-1 satellite is still in orbit.
The successful launch of dongfanghong-1 has ushered in a new era in China's space history, making China the fifth country in the world to independently develop and launch man-made earth satellites after the Soviet Union, the United States, France and Japan
