The FDL-6 SOMV (USAF Flight Dynamics Laboratory Sub-Orbital Maneuvering Vehicle) was one in a series of orbital vehicles designed to explore the characteristics of hypersonic flight. Primarily used as a reentry vehicle, the craft would use a delta planform during reentry along with retractable straight wings to augment subsonic flight. The vehicle's shape, initially conceived by Lockheed Martin, would later be further explored by the USAF FDL.

This version is a single-stage spaceplane, contrasting from the original conception to be launched from the cargo bay of the US STS Shuttle.

Slider 1 operates the subsonic wing hinge, Slider 2 the takeoff flaps, and AGs are named. Use the RCS thrusters in upper atmosphere, the vehicle loses lateral stability in lower air densities.

@Samps0n Turn on the option that allows parts other than wings to generate lift. It will work then.

Tho Lockheed xplanes like the hypergolic fuels. I’d want nowhere near it. I can’t get any lift out of the plane tho. T/w won’t do it on its own, I tweaked the wings in the end to get off the tarmac. Now surely I am missing something, right? I had the wings out(even expanded them at one point)

@Samps0n Its not extreme, you pull a cord to jettison the canopy. The canopy is explosive and gets jettisoned into the air. The purpose of the long pull is to ensure safety to the rescurer who is jettisoning the canopy. Google any canopy jettison, its how it works. It's for emergencies on the ground, not space. Thanks!

“Pull handle out 6’ to jettison canopy” . That is 2metres , if not a typo would you explain to me who would do the jettisoning in space? Do you know of any craft that has that type of extreme distances? Seems like a car lighter that you push in 1.5 ft instead of 1.5in …. It’s beautifully done. Left no detail out, even the confusing ones, lol. Am I right that this never left the drawing board?
