Designed to demonstrate Soviet nuclear capability, the explosion was so powerful that it shattered windows over 900 km away and produced a fireball visible from space.The Tu-95, a long-range strategic bomber, was modified to carry and release the bomb safely. A parachute system was deployed to slow its descent, giving the aircraft time to escape the massive shockwave.
