UPDATE: this craft is not functional anymore as electric motor physics of original design has been obsoleted. An attempt of redesign with new parts is hitting a wall of incorrectly implemented new electric motor physics, details here.
Rotodyne
Electric rotocraft capable of delivering 20t container to 2+ Kkm (or 1.5 Kkm out and back). Uses both gyros and aerodynamic control surfaces for full controllability over whole range of speeds.
Balanced against cargo bay, so dropping the container retains flying characteristics.
Uses elevon (elevator+aileron) control mixer in vizzy for main wing.
Taxi with pitch and rudder.
Cargo bay operates off AG7. Uploaded model carries 20t dead weight fuel tank in cargo bay; remove and replace with conainer to fly for contract.
Performance (with 20t load):
- t/o throttle - 65%
- cruise speed - 120+ m/s
- Vne ~180 m/s
Tips:
- take off like a helicopter - high throttle, steep forward pitch, gradually level off maintaining level flight as speed comes up; then fly like a plane, keeping nose down;
- non-compensated over pitch - may have tendency of increasing climb or sink when goes off balance point on straight flight;
- for long flights, accelerate up to 120+ at full power, trim pitch way forward as needed, keep adjusting vertical speed with throttle;
- if goes uncontrolled at high speed / high power, cut throttle to 50%, let it slow down a bit, level, reapply power 65+ %;
- as it normally flies with high negative angle of attack, use Nav Ball to monitor velocity vector - keep at horizon for straight flight, point to target when landing;
- at full power can take off from water (DSC Bay), thus saving a lot of launch cost vs. Ali and DSC runways;
- has nothing to do with Fairey Rotodyne, but make sure to check out that unique historical rotocraft.
New design in progress, uses Strider prop and smooth airfoil wings.
