The tiger was an interesting vehicle, and to this day, a target of hate, and false mythicism. it weighted 55 tonnes, was about the same overall size as a panzer IV ausf G, and had a 650HP engine, it was more mobile than any other tank of similar weight, and being eqquiped with the 88mm KampfwagenKanone 36, it could pierce any enemy tank before it could be pierced himself.
Many people misunderstand the tiger's main role, specially in games like war thunder, you see the tiger being used as a breakthrough tank, being used on the frontlines at close range. which was nowhere near it's designed role, the tiger was conceived from the ground up as being an ambush tank, which could take hits if spotted. it's armour was great, but not amazing, a t34/76 could still penetrate it's sides from any distance below 200 meters, and even if not penetrated, it's armour could shatter, break on the weld joints, or it could have important mechanisms broken by non penetrating hits, like the suspension or final drive.
Being a relativelly small tank for it's weight, it's components had to be made as small as possible to fit inside the cramped spaces inside it's hull, the fuel lines were overstressed, the air filters were just big enough to keep the engine working, and the fuel tanks were smaller than average. the tiger was mechanically reliable if kept under good watch and proper maintenance, but that is easier said than done, thanks to the afforementioned crampedness of it's engine bay, most components were difficult to access. in average, after 1 hour of driving, a tiger would need 1,2 hours of maintenance, be it by repairing the fuel lines, tightening the 196 track links, cleaning and blowtorching every single one of the 48 roadwheels (for reference, a t34 had 10 roadwheels, each with a small gap in the middle to accomodate the guide horns) so on and so forth, the fact that most tiger units were constantly moving up and down the frontline to parry attacks didn't help the maintenance situation either, only rarely would a tiger crew get time to sit down and care for their intricate piece of machinery.
A common misconception is that the tiger 1 was underpowered, but weighting 55 tonnes, and having a 650HP engine (670 when not used with the RPM limiter), it had a 25% higher horsepower to weight ratio than the m4a2 sherman with it's radial aircraft engine, the real problem of the tiger was not being underpowered, but being too cramped for it's own good, most components were barely big or strong enough to last more than a hundred hours, it was faster and more agile than even the panzer 4, but it didn't have the longevity that came with the latter.
NOW, for my in-game tiger:
max speed is 7m/s, around 25km/h, which is what you'd expect from a tiger going offroad, about 5km/h faster than a panzer 3 or 4.
it can neutral steer, but thanks to the ground being made of velcro, you need to give the tank some rest at every 90 degrees, to allow the tracks to pop back into place.
the turret is operated by roll and pitch, and since it uses an electric motor instead of a rotator, you can do as many revolutions as you want, just be sure to keep the hatches closed while traversing, to avoid hitting them with the gun's barrel
avoid doing sudden turns when moving at high speeds, slow down to 4m/s THEN turn, the tracks don't have a tendency to throw, so don't worry much about doing sustained turns
all 5 crew positions have their own named cameras, and the interior is fully modelled, with vision slits, gunsights, and functioning controls (steering wheel and turret actuating handles)
all activation groups are labelled.
ACTIVATION GROUPS:
AG1: tentioning system (don't fiddle with it, just leave it on)
AG4: open and closes all 4 hatches, and moves their respective cameras to the outside for better visibility (gunner doesn't have a hatch)
AG5: closes the driver's view port, real tigers had those to protect the driver from small arms fire and shrapnel.
AG6: activates the hull MG's controls, allowing you to traverse and elevate it.
AG9: activates turret control, allowing you to traverse the turret, and depress/elevate the main gun
AG10: toggles interior and headlights.
some small warnings:
make sure your pc is good, the part count on this thing is stupidly high, and more than half of those parts are constantly being calculated for collision (tracks, idlers, drive sporckets and roadwheels)
GET YOUR PHYSICS SETTINGS MAXED OUT, the game sets physics only to high at most, so you need to change the preset to custom and set all physics settings to ultra
i hope you like this thing, leave an upvote if you do, this thing was by far the most difficult project i've ever worked on, and in all honesty, i am surprised it works as well as it does.
fun fact: unlike american crews, who would often give their tanks women's names, Tigers used only male names, like Dietrich, Grendel, Etc...
