The Soviet Voskhod program, widely considered to be the Gemini-equivalent, was actually much less elegant or scientific than many seem to think. It was just a Vostok spacecraftwith a few extra steps, namely more seats and provisions for EVAs. It didn't have a proper propulsion block, it couldn't do fine maneuvers, and it was generally a very crude design. The Soviet engineers got to work on a replacement. It was to be a spacecraft that could fulfill many roles at once - that means, it had to have a large amount of delta-V, to be maneuverable, to be large enough to be comfortable on longer trips, and to be able to dock. It had provisions to be upgraded to launch humans to the moon (LOK). This multipurposness allowed it to stay in service for just shy of 60 years.
The rocket is a development of the earlier Soyuz rockets, themselves a development Vostok and Voskhod launchers, which are based upon the R-7 family. This variant was flying Progress and Soyuz spacecraft until 2019.

@OrionTechnologies My school is not operating right now, I've got way too much time. I will cool down a lot in May.
