Sputnik 1 was launched on October 4th, 1957 from Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan atop an R-7 rocket. Sputnik 1’s body was rouphly the size of a beach ball and housed a set of bstteries a cooling fan and a radio transmitter. Which produced the iconic “beep heard round the world” which could be picked up by anybody with a ham radio. Sputnik although harmless itself proved that the Soviet Union had the capability to succesfully launch an ICBM (Intercontinental Ballistic Missle). Sputnik 1 singlehandedly kicked off the space race as well the kicked the arms race into high gear. Sputnik continued to oporate for 21 days after which it batteries died. Sputnik continued to orbit until January 4th, 1958 when it burned up while reentering Earth’s atmophere.
