Cylero Crewed Mission. Featuring the Interplanitary Window Calculator Vizzy.
The spacecraft consists of 3 main stages: The crew transporter, on the starboard side, for accent and return to Droo surface, the Cylero lander to port side, and the mothership Bonaventure.
Bonaventure is a nuclear powered, vessel accomodating 4 Droods in comfort for the 2 year mission. it has plenty of fuel for the task if flown with a reasonable amout of care.
Here is a suggested flight plan.
1. Place Bonaventure in Droo orbit. The crew has already arrived from the surface and docked the crew transporter. You won't need it again for a while.
2. Initiate the departure window by selecting Cylero as the target and activating AG1. The computer with then begin calculating. Have patience, it can take a few minutes. A window will open, just follow instructions.
3. Once the time warp is complete, it's time to leave Droo's SOI. To save fulel, begin a series of transfer burns to enter Juno orbit. I suggest using 3-4 minute burns each time around at periapsis. Y
This craft is heavy and slow at first so it will take 5 or 6 transfer burns to get to interplanetary space.
4. Now that you are in Juno orbit. make necessary course corrections fo a nice close encounter with Cylero.
5. Use another set of transfer burns, so save fuel to achieve Cylero orbit. Around 200 Km will do fine.
6. Detach lander (the one with the heat shield on the aft end), and begin your descent. For realism during the atmospheric heating phase idle the engines to avoid engine damage. >> NOTE: everything is sequenced with staging so there are no Activation Group commands to fumble with,. Just cycle through the stages as they come up while flying the lander and you're all set. Make use of Quick Save until you get used to it <<
When your speed goes below 1000M/s, stage to separate the fairing and deploy the hypersonic parachutes, then quicky stage again to sep the heat shield and extend the landing gear. At about 1000 meters alturude stage to cut parachutes and quickly throttle up the landing engines. Use camera views for landing. Again you'll have olenty of fuel for landing and accent back to orbit.
7. Launch, rendezvous and dock with Bonaventure. Dock at the mother ship's command module at the front, transfer crew then discard the lander, Fire up the crew transporter and reposition it at the nose of Bonaventure. This is to keep the weight on center line for the return to Droo
8. You will have to manually set up the Cylero to Droo return window. Time warp until Droo is about 45º behind Cylero in their orbits, then use 3-4 transfer burns to leave Cylero SOI.
9. At this point, you may be concerned about fuel quantity. Never fear. >>NOTE: The central spine of Bonaventure is a reserve fuel tank.<< use fuel transfer to refill the engine pod with enough to get you home.
10. Drop into a nice big Droo orbit. about the same altitude as Luna is fune. The crew transporter is a repurposed Luna craft so pleanty of fuel to set up encounter and reentry with Droo.
There you have it. I hope you enjoy my attempt to make a realistic and functional space craft. It's been tested many times and it works.
