A replica of the rocket that took the first Americans into space, the Mercury-Redstone was derived from an Army ballistic missile and was modified to carry a space capsule instead of a warhead. It traveled in a suborbital trajectory and carried Alan Shepard and Gus Grissom in 1961.

Features include:

  • Functional launch escape system, retro rockets, and RCS thrusters
  • Realistic fuel, thrust, and weight
  • Functional rudders
  • Capsule floats realistically upon splashdown
  • Realistic dimensions taken from drawings and photos
  • Historically accurate staging sequence and animations

Key commands:
Abort using escape tower: 1
Fire retro rockets: 2
Toggle RCS on/off: 0

Notes: There are a few things I could not get quite right due to limitations of the options in the designer, the main one being the wide stripes on the booster.

Before initiating the retro rockets prior to reentry, select Retrograde and ensure the RCS thrusters are activated so the capsule maintains retro attitude.

The flag on the side of the capsule is a flag MFD from Gozinya. The tinker panel was used to make some parts on this rocket.

Enjoy!
