Updated for the March '22 update with refinements and new engines. I had a lot of fun with this one.
After Doing the Zenit satellite I figured I might as well do a ground up build of Vostok.
Though it looks unconventional to western eyes, this design went on to become the foundation for the most flown spacecraft in history and retains a wonderful post modern, almost pulp fiction sci-fi aesthetic that I attempted to capture.
Because of the secretive nature of the Soviet space program, contemporary resources are quite scarce save for photos of modern museum examples which all very to great extent so complete accuracy is almost impossible but I'm happy with the result.
Rocket and craft fly well and low orbit can be comfortably achieved if not pushed too hard.
Launch at 75 percent power and once past 60km altitude, throttle down to around 50 percent and wait for appoapsis then feather the power to get to a nice circular orbit. (or just use the standard burn, coast, burn method).
Now uses the new Spirit engine for retro rocket.
Slider 1 operates the radiator vanes
Slider 2 disconnects the capsule restraining straps (NOTE: activate slider 2 BEFORE staging the mechanical/service module!)
Slider 3 deploys the antennae.
Have fun.
