On May 5 1961, America's space dreams became reality. On that day, Freedom 7, America's first manned spaceflight, became the second manned spaceflight, having been beaten by the Soviets one month earlier.
On that day, Alan Shepard became the first American in space. It allowed President Kennedy to commit the United States to landing on the moon.
What followed would be Mankind's greatest adventure. NASA embarked on years of pioneering research and development. Project Mercury and Project Gemini paved the way for Apollo, and for the moon itself.
But it all began on that fateful day. May 5, 1961
