The Yakovlev Yak-141 was the successor to the Yak-38. The Yak-141 is designed, like its predecessor, with a thrust vectoring reactor for lift and cruise, plus two vertical reactors used during stationary phases.
There were two prototypes built as well as two cells for static testing. The Yak-141 made its first flight with conventional takeoff on March 9, 1987 then its first vertical takeoff on December 29, 1989. The second prototype was seriously damaged on October 5, 1991 during a landing on the aircraft carrier Admiral Gorchkov
