The Ferdinand tank destroyer was a German heavy armored vehicle used during World War II. Based on the chassis of the VK 45.01(P) prototype, it was developed after Porsche's design for the Tiger I was rejected. Armed with a powerful 88mm Pak 43/2 gun, the Ferdinand was highly effective against enemy armor, capable of destroying tanks at long ranges. However, its initial design lacked a secondary weapon for close defense and had mobility issues due to its weight and unreliable drivetrain. After its debut at the Battle of Kursk in 1943, surviving units were upgraded with a hull-mounted machine gun, improved armor, and other modifications, earning the new designation "Elefant." Despite its limitations, it was a formidable tank destroyer when used defensively.
