Space Shuttle Enterprise was the first shuttle built for the Space Shuttle Program. It was constructed as the prototype for the following shuttles, and was constructed without engines or a heatshield, therefore it was incapable of spaceflight. It performed atmospheric tests to verify the aerodynamics and handling of the space shuttle.
It was carried atop a modified 747 and then released at altitude, where it then glided to the airstrip.
It was originally going to be named 'Constitution' but do to a write in by Star Trek fans, it was changed to Enterprise.
