Sputnik 1 was launched on Oct. 4, 1957. Sputnik 1 was designed to reveal the density of Earth's upper atmosphere. Sputnik 1 transmitted signals back to Earth with this information around every 90 minutes or a full orbit around Earth. Sputnik burned up in Earth's atmosphere on January 4, 1958. Sputnik 1 is now one of many historical satellites known to man.
