About
The K9 Thunder (VIDAR) is a Norwegian variant of the South Korean K9 Thunder self-propelled howitzer, developed by Hanwha Defense. VIDAR, which stands for Versatile Indirect Artillery, was selected by Norway to replace its aging M109A3GNM howitzers. This advanced artillery system features a 155mm/52 caliber gun capable of firing rounds up to 40+ km using extended-range ammunition. It boasts a high rate of fire, delivering three rounds in 15 seconds in burst mode and 6–8 rounds per minute in sustained fire. The K9 VIDAR is built on a tracked chassis, allowing it to reach speeds of 67 km/h, and is manned by a crew of five, though it can function with a reduced crew of three in emergencies. The system is equipped with a modern fire control system for precise targeting and automation, enhancing its battlefield effectiveness. With an onboard ammunition capacity of 48 rounds, the K9 VIDAR is also paired with the K10 ARV (Ammunition Resupply Vehicle) to maintain operational endurance. Designed with armor protection against small arms fire and shell splinters, it ensures crew survivability. Norway ordered 24 units of the K9 VIDAR along with 6 K10 ARVs, with deliveries starting in 2020 to modernize its artillery forces. This system significantly enhances Norway’s firepower, mobility, and battlefield capabilities.
