The J-12 was developed by Nanchang Aircraft Manufacturing Plant and is China's first light jet fighter aircraft to break away from the design structure of Soviet made aircraft, completely developed by China from body design to component manufacturing.
The design concept of J-12 is centered around "people's war" and requires the ability to take off and land at short distances, be easy to maintain, have low cost, be ready to fight at any time, and be able to engage in warfare anywhere. It can appear like a guerrilla team in unexpected places by the enemy. To this end, the Chinese Air Force has proposed to develop and equip ultra light frontline fighter jets, weighing around 4 tons, which can be mounted on trucks for mobile deployment; Good maneuverability, mainly due to outstanding acceleration, climbing, and hovering performance.
The J-12 prototype successfully completed its first test flight on December 26, 1970, with the first batch of three prototypes produced. Marshal Ye Jianying of China praised the J-12 aircraft as the "Flying Li Xiangyang" (a guerrilla character in a famous Chinese TV drama).
The J-12 has a normal takeoff weight of 4450 kilograms and an empty weight of 3100 kilograms, making it the lightest supersonic fighter in the world. The power is provided by a WP-6B jet engine, with a thrust of 4050 kilograms and a total thrust to weight ratio of 0.91.
In February 1978, during the clearance of new aircraft development models and adjustment of equipment systems, it was decided that the J-12 would not be included in the equipment system and development would be stopped.
