This monstrosity was actually considered by NASA. In the early days of shuttle design, NASA thought about simply using modified versions of the Saturn V first stage to launch it. It would then use a smaller external H2/O2 tank to propel itself into orbit. Then, the fisrt stage would come back and land like an airplane.
