Kona 402-2k

The Kona 402-2000 was Espia's strike variant of its Kona 402 Super - one of the worlds most advanced fighter aircraft at the time. While the country held a strong roster of vehicles for air superiority against other air targets, the air-to-ground capability of the air force and carrier-borne strike forces were limited.

Kona's response to this was a conversion of its powerful fighter into a heavier, bulkier, and more advanced bomber variant built to excel in low-altitude deep-strike operations. The twin-seat aircraft featured capabilities for air-to-air missiles, a strong IRCM module, a built-in targeting pod and heightened wing loading for air-to-ground munitions. Later variants featured built in electronic warfare equipment to mask its true location and heading when detected by enemy radar.

While the aircraft proved to be effective at its role, the wing loading of the aircraft was not initially fit for the bombing role, leading to accelerated wear on the air frame and notoriously frequent maintenance and airworthiness issues, which were only remedied later on.
