The Astérix or A-1 (French military designation) was France’s first satellite (6th in the world) it ever launched into orbit. Astérix was launched on November 26th, 1965 by the CNES. It was launched by a 3 stage Daimant-A launch vehicle (France was the first nation other than the United States and the Soviet Union to design, build, and launch its own rocket. England, Canada, and Italy used US launch vehicles for their satellites). Astérix was meant to collect atmospheric data while in Earth’s low orbit, it was only active for 111 days after being put into orbit due to it batteries running out. Astérix remains in orbit to this day and will do so for hundreds of years due to its relatively high location in Earth’s low orbit.
This character is where Astérix gained its name, this character is also named Astérix and is from a French comic book originally from 1959
