Vanguard 1 was the first ever successful solar electric powered satellite in space. Vanguard 1 was launched on March 17, 1958 from Launch Complex 18 at Cape Canaveral Florida. Vanguard was around 16 centimetres (6.3 in) in diameter. Vanguard’s mission was to reveal the effects of the environment on a satellite and its systems in Earth orbit.
