SN-8 Replica with working Elonerons made in honor of today’s (December 9 2020) almost fully successful launch of the Starship 12.5km test.
Hopefully this will get me to 5K points, but we’ll see.

@TopSecret2 oh that’s what you meant - lol i thought you were challenging the date sn8 launched. But i totally agree that it is a crappy craft that skipped over major steps, plus Scott Manley proved why reaction wheels aren’t a good idea.
@VosAerospace I’m sure about the cold gas thrusters as RCS. Can’t exactly rotate two wheels to change the orientation of a craft when all the mass is in the aft section. Like two people tugging at each over for control of their toy... oh wait.
@TopSecret2 yup. sn8 launched december 9. this craft was published on december 9. u sure abt that math?
@VosAerospace
Me: Looks at calendar
Are you sure ‘bout that?
@TopSecret2 Oh, I know. I made it in about five minutes, since SN8 had literally JUST launched.
This thing has a mass of serious problems:
1. The gyroscope and batteries could easily be replaced by monopropellant and clipped RCS nozzles (which can be done w/o tinker panel), which would make this more accurate to the ability of the Starship to Bellyflop.
2. There only really needs to be three rockets anyway for sea level performance; why add more mass and steps for vacuum engines when the rocket doesn’t have the deltaV for space anyway?
3. The center of mass should be redone so that the rocket can rotate itself around it. When a plane takes off it has to rotate because that improves lift, but to rotate it needs a CoM at the rear landing gear so it would act as a fulcrum. Likewise, thrust vectoring on the raptor engines needs to be done so it can rotate itself vertically for the belly flop maneuver.
@VosAerospace 😂 that's fast!
@ZWAC I try to embody the simple part of the name SIMPLErockets
@ZWAC Well, it got me to 10K rly. also, please do!
@VosAerospace ya
46 parts to get 6k, amazing, I should advertise in Discord.
@ahmad183 All good.
Sorry i'm late
@DutchAerospace Yeah. I threw this together in about five minutes.
@VosAerospace ok, that sounds better. I tried it with engines on and is was turning faster, but not fast enough.
@Patelsh24 About five minutes
@VosAerospace hah. How long did it take you to make after it landed?
@Patelsh24 Thanks for the commentary - I was think of making the Elonerons out of fuel tanks but I had to throw something together rly quickly since they had just landed it. Literally just borrowed the starship from my last starship post and labeled it SN8...
The elonerons shouldn’t really be made of fins or structural panels. Should prob be made out of struts and/or fuel tanks to get the beefy shape. Also I don’t think SN8 had vactors on it. The forward elonerons are also kinda big
Awesome!
@DutchAerospace I made SN8 automatic launch and landing with VIZZY .... see @Barran
@DutchAerospace Yeah... Sorry. I have a better version that I’m going to post soon that has the cold gas thrusters so it’s turns better. Out of curiosity, did you do what the actual test did and use the engines to help the turn?
It's turning waaay to slow, so when I start belly-flopping at 12.5 km, I will crash when I start flipping at 10 km
@VosAerospace Yup, your soaring high man🛫
I wanna take it to 12.8 km in the sky and nearly making it land
