The deadline has passed! I guess no one decided to participate though...

Deadline: 19th February, 2024

(extended from 5th February)

Your mission is to fly a course, with 29 checkpoints numbered 0-28. Which is a system that you can play on here

All aircraft will be scored on Speed, you then have one of two categories to gain extra points in: Craft Appearance or Craft Quality, which are explained below.

Points gained from categories is averaged, so make sure to excel in both categories, points are distributed like so:

Speed

  • At first place: 40 points
  • At second place: 30 points
  • At third place: 25 points
  • Then for every 1 min slower than 3rd place: -1 point, until you gain 0 points

Craft Appearance

  • Details (Livery, text, drop tanks, flaps, ladders, doors to cockpits or whatever your craft needs to make it feel more alive): up to 20 points
  • Plausibility (sci-fi crafts are allowed but must be at least somewhat realistic (Think Star Wars, EVE, Halo etc)): up to 10 points

Craft Quality

  • Flight quality (stable take-off, flight and landing): up to 15 points
  • Realistic and comfortable handling (doesn't rip itself apart at 10m/s): up to 15 points

Try not to re-use crafts you have made in the past; make a craft dedicated to this challenge, you also do not have to make replicas! Go crazy!
Points for speed are higher as I would like crafts that are fast above crafts that look good, however a very good looking craft that completes the course in good time can also win.

Submissions are to be videos of the uncut, normal speed run (excluding in game time warp) uploaded to YouTube or elsewhere, runs are judged by the in-game time it takes to complete one lap around the course. In game time is used to allow people to utilize pausing/quick saving without time use. Timer starts when you pass the Red and Blue pillars at the beginning of the course at checkpoint 0. Timer ends when you pass the same Red and Blue pillars at checkpoint 0 again

Post the link to your video in the replies to this challenge.

Use, or better, build your own craft for this challenge! If you build a new craft for this challenge, download this post's craft and use its command chip so that your craft can be a successor post.
Tinker panel disallowed.
I encourage you to upload the craft you use in the challenge to make sure you/others aren't trying to cheat.

For a run, remember:
Choose one of the two categories
Make sure the in-game minutes and seconds can be seen (not years/months/days, to change it just click on it)
Stay below 200m! 1 Point is deduced every 50m you go above 200m (so going to 200m doesn't deduce points, but 201m deduces 1 point etc)
No cutting corners! If you need to, slow down by cutting throttle.
Stay on the outside of the area encircled by the checkpoints, specifically the red cylinders under the numbers (stay on the right of the checkpoints)
You may fly through the checkpoint numbers but remember, under 200m and no entering the encircled area
No collaboration, this is a solo contest
Submit your best run
Modded parts and tinker panel are disallowed
Propellor driven crafts are allowed (including drones/helicopters if you are crazy enough to use them)

Extra challenges (remember, quicksave/quickload are allowed, even if you crash and reload the extra challenges will still be awarded)
Points awarded for extra challenges/features:
-Flying back to and landing at the DSC after completing a run: +3 points
-Taking off from DSC (any vanilla launch location) and flying to the Contest area, then preforming a run on the course in one go (time warp allowed for flight to contest zone): +5 points (only +2 if you set and use launch location at the contest area once arriving)
-Staying under 100m: +3 points

Tips for the video

Upload only your best run, and include the flight from/ to the DSC and contest area if you are going for the extra points (time warp allowed, video editing (including speed up) not allowed)
You can add music or your voice or whatever, remember YT or other video website's Terms Of Service and remember other people can click on the link.
If your video is deleted fix it.
If you want to you can show the building process although you don't need to as only the best run will be judged (this does mean you can hide some sneaky stuff, but you wouldn't do that would you?)

Most importantly, HAVE FUN!

Prizes

Prizes are as follows

1st Place: $25 Steam gift card
2nd Place: $15 Steam gift card
3rd Place: $10 Steam gift card

Here is an example run, obviously you will not cut any of the flying out or speed the footage up, unless you aren't going for the extra points, at which point you can cut out the flight to the contest area.

The amount of points attainable are subject to balance and change, but I will not modify the points to give others disadvantages

Small test window is good for speed build skills, making it also a building challenge.
If you cant get something built in 10 days and race it in 2 days then you should spend your time knitting instead.

@ZeusSpaceAgency Yes you can, although If you are going for the extra challenge of flying from the DSC you'll only get two points

Are we able to save a location so we don’t need to fly all the way to the competition area?

@JLaerospace I thought about the whole tinker panel and mods thing and I feel like it would be too complicated for me to allow it, as I would need to make sure someone doesn't get an advantage

I have also said people can make successor post crafts:
"download this post's craft and use its command chip so that your craft can be a successor post."

You can certainly expect a JL submission ;)

Sounds very fun! Maybe you can allow tinker panel or mods only for aesthetic parts? Would make things easier. Also, maybe you could add that the crafts can be successors to this post

@XionmassResearchDevt Yeah, I agree on the tinker panel stuff, might change that

That's a lot to read 😁. But I don't agree on tinker or mods. For I know what I can do on that's vanilla. I know mods and tinker like mass or alike is pure cheating
