Chaozhou Dagu is a traditional music form in the Chaoshan region of Guangdong, which is a combination of gongs, drums, and orchestral music. Chaozhou Da Luo Gu, evolved from the traditional drum and percussion music genre, is one of the most popular music genres in Shantou, Chaozhou, and Jieyang in the Chaoshan region. It belongs to the square music of Chaozhou music and was selected for the first batch of national intangible cultural heritage list in 2006.
Chaozhou Da Luo Gu is mainly composed of percussion music, which is a large-scale ensemble form centered around Da Gu and led by Suona. The drummer is both the lead and conductor of the band. The drummer hammers at the heart, edge, and edge of the drum, using techniques such as loud hitting, muffling, heavy hitting, light hitting, and rhythm changes, as well as adding flowers to the mallet to direct the band's performance. As an ancient folk culture, Chaozhou gongs and drums are widely popular in eastern Guangdong, southern Fujian, and Southeast Asia. Wherever there are Chaoshan people, there is the charm of Chaozhou gongs and drums. Every year or regional customs festival, the sound of big gongs and drums shakes a hundred miles.
