The LGM-30G Minuteman-III ICBM was the world first MIRV. It’s three W62, each with a yeild of 170 kilotons of TNT could target three diffrent locations, as oppose to all previous ICBMs which could only strike a single target. Along side the three warheads, the RS deployed decoys and chaff. Knowing the Soviets only had to strike the hundred LCCs instead of the thousands of missle silos to fully dissarm all Minutemen missles, it was decided to have airborne LCCs to make sure the Soviets wouldn’t be able to do so. The Single Reentry Vehicle (SRV) modification enabled the United States ICBM force to abide by the now-vacated START II treaty requirements by reconfiguring Minuteman-III missiles from three reentry vehicles down to one.
