Have you ever heard of the Pioneer 11? Or the Surveyor program? One thing that they have in common is the launch vehicle. Engineers from NASA decided that Able or Agena second stages won't cut it for large, deep space missions when mated to the Atlas booster, so they stuck a Centaur on top, giving it enough performance to get the 400kg Pioneer probe directly to Jupiter, with no gravity assists.

@OrionTechnologies I am actually working on it right now! I finished the airframe and balanced it for RSS, only some cosmetic additions left. It should be out tomorrow, though it is hard to balance (it used hypergolics in real life, and those are not in the game. I need to manually change some fuel properties in tinker panel). Hopefully you'll like it :)!
