BACKGROUD STORY:
During the cold war, Moscow learned that the US was working on a Top-secret High-altitude spy plane project. So the KGB was ordered to collect intelligence data and specifications about the plane. It was later discovered that the plane was named U-2 Dragon Lady.

So Nikita Khrushchev challenged several top Soviet aircraft companies to make aircraft that could match or even exceed that capability.

Mikoyan, Yakovlev, Sukhoi and Tupolev competed to answer this challenge.

But in the end, Moscow was more impressed by Tupolev's design. Even other competitors were surprised by the design, because it had "crazy" specifications for its time.

This aircraft was completed in 1959, and was named Tu-28 Ruppelya, inspired by Ruppell's Griffon Vulture which is the highest bird flying ability.

Entered the service in the same year. And became the top secret Soviet aircraft for the next decades.

Because these were Top secret Soviet aircraft, only 40 of them were ever built, and each was used by the Soviet Air Forces and the KGB. No other country knew of the existence of this aircarft, not even Soviet allies, until the Soviet collapse in 1991.

Due to its specifications, this aircraft is not only used for reconnaissance, but can also be used as a bomber, because it is capable of carrying up to 5 Tons of payload. In fact, it is often used to carry Air-to-air missiles to intercept U-2 aircraft.

It was even reported to have shot down several U-2 aircraft, but the Pentagon denied these reports.
