Atlas V is an American rocket, tracing its roots back to the SM-65 Atlas ballistic missile. It is a descendent of the first American crew rated rocket (the LV-3B) and is the second rocket of the family powered by the Russian Energomash RD-180 engine, which is the reason for it's early retirement.
The 431 configuration is equipped with 3 GEM-63 Solid Rocket Boosters, placed asymetrically. This is due to the Atlas 5's main fuel tank architecture. It can lob about 9t into the Low Earth Orbit, and, of course, you can configure the boosters whichever way you want (0, 1, 2 or 3 have been carried in reality, all in unsymmetrical configurations)
