The ASSET (Aerothermodynamic Elastic Structural Systems Environmental Tests) was an experimental re-entry vehicle developed by the American aeronautics company McDonnel Aircraft. This experimental vehicle combines the concept of the capsule and the aircraft into one small compact vehicle.

Unlike the real life ASSET test vehicle, this particular model is a manned vehicle. This version is also double the size and 4 times the mass of the original spacecraft. Thus, this craft has to be launched from the Titan II.

    2 bits:

    1. The spacecraft seems to generate a lot of aerodynamic lift on ascent. This causes the first stage to either gravity turn too quickly or to not gravity turn at all. Thankfully, due to the massive load of Delta V on the second stage this issue can be mitigated completely. On liftoff wait until 200m/s, or just after beginning gravity turn, before rolling so the craft generates lift against the rocket.

    2. A very fun little spacecraft here! I previously designed a rocket that’s optimized towards extracting Droods from orbit. This little craft is a good way towards inserting Droods into an orbit.
